Stelios Koumlis

Research Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering

Headshot of Stelios KoumlisDr. Stylianos (Stelios) Koumlis joined Dr. Lamberson’s group as a post-doc at Drexel University in the Fall of 2017 before moving to Colorado School of Mines in the summer of 2019 to continue his research work in the X-STRM lab. Stelios is heading the X-STRM side of a joint ONR-MURI project lead by Prof. Christian Franck at U-Wisconsin, Brown University, Sandia National Laboratory, University of Southern California, and Team Wendy, focusing on dynamic deformation and failure of helmet foam liners for improved head gear and testing methods that address and prevent mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and blast related TBI. Stelios received his M.S. and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, with a dissertation on an experimental model of blunt-impact induced traumatic brain injuries under Prof. Veronica Eliasson. He moved to the US after obtaining his B.S. in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, with a major in structural mechanics and minor in applied mechanics, materials technology and biomechanics.
