Carl Frick

Professor and Department Head, Mechanical Engineering

Carl Frick joined Colorado School of Mines in 2021 as Professor and Department Head of Mechanical Engineering. Carl received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and was a post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart, Germany. Prior to joining Mines, Carl was the Department Head of Mechanical Engineering at University of Wyoming, where he had been on the faculty since 2008. Carl is also the Senior Advisor and Co-Founder of Impressio Tech, which is developing liquid crystal elastomers for biomedical and safety applications.

Carl’s research activities involve integration of materials science, bioengineering, and mechanical engineering to characterize new materials for use in emerging technologies. Current projects primarily focus on exploring the mechanical behavior of materials, with specific interests in metallic & polymer biomaterials, shape memory materials, and nanometer-scale materials.
